Chapter Thirteen

Blaze wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans as he followed Jason back to Mac’s studio. The Wanderers were already in there, along with Jake. He still wasn’t really sure how he felt about replacing their guitarist or what they thought about it.

When they reached the largest recording studio at Mac’s, Jason clapped Mac on the back. “How’s it going?”

“You’re late,” Mac said with a chuckle.

“There was an accident two blocks away.”

He scowled. “Are they still clearing that away? It’s a little dent.”

“Yeah, in a Rolls.”

“Kathy put a bigger dent than that in hers the first week she got it. I thought she was going to have a heart attack. I told her better she did it than someone else. I didn’t want to have to bail her out of jail.”

Jason chuckled. “Good plan.”

Mac turned to Blaze. “They’re ready for you.”

Nerves hit him hard. Somehow this was bigger than auditioning for Cassie. This was a project that might ultimately become a part of him and who he was as an artist. He tightened his hold on his guitar case and nodded.

Blaze walked over to the studio and opened the door. Pete was busy tuning his guitar while the other three guys chatted nearby, but when he entered, they all turned his way. Four pairs of eyes stared in his direction.

Tommy was the first to speak. “Hey, Blaze. How ya doing?” he asked and held out his hand.

Blaze shook with him and all the other guys in turn. “I’m doing well. How was your ride up here?”

“We all didn’t die,” Pete said. “So I guess that’s what you would call decent.”

Blaze gaped as Tommy sighed. “You’ll get used to him after a while.”

“I guess I better.”

Pete grinned and then looked down at his bass as he tuned it. “Mr. Stockton is one of the biggest managers in the business. We couldn’t pass up a chance to be repped by him.”

Blaze frowned. He was certain Jason would have made it clear that he would wait until Jake was better. “So this is a temporary gig until Jake gets back.”

“No, this is permanent,” Tommy said. “That is, if you want it.”

Blaze nodded. “Well, let’s see how it works. Jake is an awesome guitarist and you guys played together…for years, right?”

Zack nodded. “Jake’s my cousin. We’ve known each other since before we were born.”

Jake rolled his eyes and punched Zack’s arm. “Man, seriously?”

Zack glared at him. “Don’t do that.”

Jake scowled. “I’m not gonna break, dude.”

Pete laughed. “He kinda almost did, bro. Remember?”

Jake scowled. “Fuck off,” he said and shoved Pete, who just chuckled.

Their chemistry was so awesome that Blaze wasn’t sure they could duplicate it with him. “Are you sure about me taking over your spot?” Blaze asked.

Jake grinned at Blaze. “I am. Maybe this wasn’t meant to be my gig. Maybe you were the one meant for this all along.”

“Dude—” Tommy started to speak but Jake cut him off as he held up his hand.

“Maybe I’m meant for bigger and better things.” He smirked, though there was a hint of sadness behind it.
